ASL Chat 02

This is a video chat for my friend Joyana. She's been a great help to me with suggestions on how to better do some of my signs.

I greet her using her sign name and ask, "How are you?" Then I tell about planting in my garden. We had nice weather with sunshine, but rain tonight. I explained how I've been learning sign, and the two websites I use mostly; http://www.lifeprint.com/ and http://www.aslpro.com/. LifePrint.com has free college-level lessons with pictures and some videos, and ASLpro.com has videos of all their signs. And they have a lot! I also sometimes reference http://www.SigningSavvy.com and the Sign Language Browser.

The song playing quietly in the background is How Great Thou Art by Carrie Underwood.
:O)

God Bless!

  1. Hi Lauren
I am also learning ASL, am very much a beginner, though. I am using the same sites as you, plus westwoodasl.com which is very low price(about$5 per lesson module)I also just picked up a dictionary at Borders books in my area for 70% off cause they are going out of business. I am trying to stay strictly ASL because I would like to be an interpreter someday (right now I am a nursing student) Sadly, I have had no luck finding anyone in deaf community in my area, which surprises me because I live in one of the most crowded states in the country. Oh well.

This is a fun blog, thanks for posting!

  2. I'll have to check out that website... did not know of that one. :) If you have Skype, maybe we could practice sometime? Also, you can check out AllDeaf.com which is a message community site for deaf, as well as ASL students. On the main page, under "sign language & oralism" there is a topic for "students looking for ASL buddies" for practicing... check it out!

  3. I don't have Skype - and am assuming one needs a web cam to use it? Don't have that either. Wish I had thought of it when I replaced my monitor! Actually, I belong to AllDeaf, I joined about a month ago..GREAT forum, so many cool people there. THe ASL buddies forum looks like unless you find someone in your area that you can meet with in person, you need a webcam or Skype.

This week I finally found someone in New Jersey who told me about a few deaf coffee get-togethers, and also a church service that is in ASL, and some plays at a small town theater. The closest big cities to where I live have events, such as Philadelphia, but it's over a half hour away and I was hoping to find something "in the neighborhood"!! So maybe the one's I just found out about will work out.

  4. Deanne,
Yes, you do need a webcam to use Skype and you are correct, a lot of the "buddies" at AllDeaf use Skype to practice.

Where in NJ are you located? We are in Southern NJ, in Atlantic County. If you're in our area, find my email in my Profile and maybe we can get together to practice?

My church has ASL Interpretation on Sunday mornings, and a nice size group of Deaf folks to meet. :)

    God Bless!

  5. Can we meet this weekend on Skype or Oovoo? Can't seem to find your email to talk directly to you via webcam.
